Venetian Fencing

Have you found us through social media?

We have showcased many of our battens on our social media pages and have worked with @Mark Marshall for many years. We have loved sharing your projects and will continue to do so. Send your images and videos of our timber to sales@egertonstimber.co.uk or tag us.

This trend has been very popular for a number of years and shows no signs of slowing down. There is however a HUGE problem when it comes to this style of fencing- ROOFING BATTEN. Now I wont go into a long rant about why it isn’t suitable, just take our word for it. Ditch the roofing batten, its cheap but looks terrible, you are wasting your hard earned money.

Our entry level batten is our slow grown 5ths Scandinavian redwood with square corners. We can send our battens UK wide, orders via the online shop are currently only possible within a 50 mile radius of our yard to contact our friendly team if you live outside of this area.

Key Things to Consider

Don’t forget the mainstays- additional vertical timbers need to be placed every 600-900mm at the rear of the fence, then pin your battens in place. Full framing is better and our team is happy to discuss this and we can help with the math!

If you decide to use a fabric membrane such as Landtex- read our disclaimed on its intended purpose and you can make an informed choice.

Brad nails are a good choice for fixing and we recommend the use of stainless steel pins.

Venetian fencing is stunning but its not the cheapest option out there. Materials START at approx £100 per l/m of 1.8m high fencing. Fancier timbers like Western red cedar can be 4 times the cost. Then don’t forget the labour!

Our smooth decking board makes a nice capping.

You can stagger your joins or space them evenly, its entirely up to you.

Oiling or adding additional treatment can prolong the life of your fence and slow down the natural weathering process. We recommend Armour Flex or Wood Treatment by Barrettine. Avoid those big tubs of cheap fence paint, they will flake quickly. Don’t forget to allow any pressure treatment to settle before applying your product.

Add a minimum of 10% waste factor!

For The Love Of A Pergola

One of the most requested garden ‘statements’ is a pergola. From contemporary cube designs to traditional open framed structures, the possibilities are endless. We can have a flat packed kit made for you but the cheapest option is to buy the individual timbers and have a go at this essential DIY project. You can tailor your pergola to suit your space. Our friendly team can offer advice and help you decide what you need. We also offer a range of stylish brackets and bolt down feet to add additional support and style to your new structure. Our sawn timber range is very popular for building a stylish but cost effective pergola. If you want to ‘push to boat out’ we can offer a range of more specialist timbers like Western red cedar, Douglas fir or even Tatajuba.

Our Top Tips

Drive screws can make installation faster but properly bolted connection are stronger.

You can add a canopy or screening for additional privacy, shading and protection from the elements. Our battens are a popular option.

Ensure your posts and weight bearing beams can carry the load over the span chosen.

Ensure your pergola is secured properly to the ground, our foot connectors are stylish and easy to install.

Add a few cuts with a handsaw, circular saw or jigsaw to shape the ends but don’t forget to reseal with cut end preserver.

Sawn timber is more cost effective than planed timber.

Outdoor Dinning & Seating

The trend for outdoor spaces to work harder is here to stay. Outdoor seating and dinning to entertain family and friends is now a must have on the garden renovation list. You may just wisht to extend your inside to outside to enjoy the garden all year round. Either way inspiration can be found below.

Our Top Tips

Consider the location of your new structure, plonked at the end of the garden is not always clever design.

Does it need to work harder by offering storage as well as the entertainment factor.

Choose quality roofing products if you want it to be more waterproof!

When building a BBQ consider heat proofing the cooking area by using specialist fire/heat boards and tiles, we love wood but sometimes its not practical!

Don’t forget to run your idea past the electrician if you are installing lighting etc, you don’t want to have to undo any of your hard work.

Consider the surrounding area, can it cope with the new level of traffic to the ‘chill out zone’

Consider the materials used, are they robust enough for the intended purpose.

Ensure wind loading and uploading has been considered so your new structure doesn’t get blown away on the first storm.

Checking planning constraints- no one likes the planning officer visiting!
